Conversion of Galvanometer Into an Ammeter

Chapter-4|Moving Charges and Magnetism| NCERT 12th Physics:

Conversion of Galvanometer Into an Ammeter:

Ammeter: A device used to measure electric current.

Ammeter is always connected in series with appliance.

A galvanometer can be converted into an ammeter by connecting a very low resistance called (shunt S) in parallel with galvanometer.

Since, Potential difference across Galvanometer and shunt will be equal because they are connected in parallel.

Example 1:  A galvanometer whose coil resistance is 10 Ohm, gives full scale deflection for 5 mA. How can you convert it into an Ammeter of range 0-5 A.

Example 2: A galvanometer whose coil resistance is 1 ohm, has 50 divisions which measures 1 μA per division. How can you convert it into an ammeter of range 0-10A.
